Reduces Physician Burnout By 32% and Decreases Clinical Review Time for Complex Visits By 40%
PRESS RELEASE FROM PHYX PRIMARY CARE
LEAWOOD, Kans. — Phyx Primary Care, a non-profit innovation lab, today announced the results of a year-long study which evaluated whether an AI Assistant could help physicians successfully practice value-based care (VBC)
while reducing the associated burdens. The study assessed Navina’s AI Copilot, which synthesizes fragmented patient data into actionable insights that support clinical decision-making, documentation and coding at the point of
care.
Primary care is shifting from a fee-for-service (FFS) payment model to VBC, promising better outcomes at a lower cost. The transition adds many layers of complexity – risk adjustment, quality management, and variable payer
demands – which significantly increase the burden on physicians and contribute to burnout.
The study found that the AI Assistant reduced administrative burden, improved documentation, and enhanced performance under value-based payment. Rather than adding to the workload, the AI Assistant enabled physicians to more easily meet reporting requirements.
The AI assistant helps identify undiagnosed conditions, improving diagnosis accuracy and patient engagement. This leads to better management of chronic conditions and appropriate reimbursement based on full patient complexity. While using the AI Assistant, one physician reported: “It’s no longer enough to recapture old codes. The Assistant finds diagnoses buried in the record – things I’d miss. That can be the difference between staying afloat or falling behind.”
Key findings from 120 physicians across 19 practices using the AI Assistant for ≥30 days:
- 40% reduction in clinical review time for complex
- visits
- 32% decrease in physician burnout
- 94% of physicians found it easy to access and use
- 92% of physicians highly trusted HCC suggestions
The surveyed practices showed improved value-based performance with 3,100 total physicians using the AI
Assistant:
- +0.153 increase in Risk Adjustment Factor (RAF)
- +1.9 point improvement in Star quality ratings
“Our research suggests that the AI Assistant is not just a helpful tool – it defines an emerging category: AI Assistant for Value-Based Care,” said Edmund Billings MD, Phyx Primary Care. “The AI Assistant significantly improve efficiency and outcomes, and may be essential for sustaining independent, high-quality primary care under modern payment models. No less important, putting AI in the hands of physicians at the point of care gives them the opportunity to provide patients with true value-based care in real-time, and not just code retrospectively for value-
based payment.”
