“Blue Cross has the position that there are two public health crises affecting our communities: COVID and racism. Both have major impacts on communities of color.”

Angel Uddin, director of diversity and inclusion (D&I) at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, opened a recent discussion with other D&I practitioners with that statement. It is a statement that has driven much of her work in 2020—first, as the COVID-19 pandemic worsened across Minnesota and the U.S., and second, as the murder of George Floyd led to unrest across the Twin Cities, prompting calls for cities, companies and organizations to do more to achieve racial and social justice.

Uddin, who started in her role at Blue Cross in August 2019, took part in this Table of Experts discussion, sponsored by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, in early July. Other participants are involved in D&I work at Allianz, RSM, Capella University and St. Catherine University.
