January 24

MD&M West will feature an array of speakers from Velentium experts in the technology, product security and human factor spaces

HOUSTON – January 24, 2023 – Velentium, a professional engineering firm that specializes in the design and manufacturing of therapeutic and diagnostic active medical devices, announced today that four thought leaders – VP of Technology Chris Jensen, CEO & Co-Founder Dan Purvis, Director of Product Security Christopher Gates and Director of Human Factors Albert Rodriguez – will speak at Medical Design and Manufacturing (MD&M) West held Feb. 7-9, 2023 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Innovating in a Risk-Averse Industry

“MD&M West encourages innovation that results in solutions,” said Jensen. “I’m thrilled to provide some innovative insight on such a risk-driven activity as medical device development.”

Jensen’s Center Stage presentation on day one of the conference focuses on an effective rubric for conducting a risk-benefit analysis of proposed new features and other innovations in the medical device concept phase. A real-world case study will be offered as illustration. The presentation is held on Feb. 7 from 12:15-1 p.m. PT. at Center Stage on the main expo floor.

Innovation from a Practical Standpoint: Simplifying the Medical Device Design Process

“We constantly look for lean processes and technologies that address customer needs faster, shorten the development runway, and provide cost savings,” said Purvis. “MD&M West brings the entire medical device design-to-market community together in a setting that fosters interaction and inspiration towards this goal.”

An author, serial entrepreneur, and the founder of six companies, Purvis will discuss how to drive an “essentialist mindset” and apply it to medical device design products and processes through organizational culture. Purvis’ book “28 Days to Save the World: Crafting Your Culture to Be Ready for Anything” lays out how to harness the power of organizational culture to prepare your organization to weather any challenges ahead. The Discover.Engineer.Build Conference Track presentation will occur Feb. 7 from 2:15-3 p.m. PT in Room 207CD.

User-Centered Design for MedTech Devices: Lessons Learned in Human Factors

“It is rewarding to be welcomed as a speaker at MD&M West where we come together to solve challenges in the advanced manufacturing industry,” said Rodriguez. “One of those challenges is our approach to user-centered design (UCD). While UCD may not always be as intuitive or universal as the design team may have assumed, there are principles that can reduce support costs, increase market penetration, reduce project delays or regulatory challenges and even mitigate recalls.”

Rodriguez’s presentation on day two of the conference focuses on how achieving UCD in practice is rarely as straightforward as it seems. In his talk, Rodriguez will provide an overview of UCD principles; explain how, when, and why to introduce those principles into existing design processes; and show how and how not to translate outcomes from UCD activities into product requirements and features. This Discover.Engineer.Build Conference Track presentation will be held in Room 210AB on Feb. 8 from 2:15-3 p.m. PT.

Aligning with the Latest FDA Cybersecurity Expectations

“I am honored to speak at another MD&M conference on MedTech security,” said Gates. “As cybersecurity requirements in premarket submissions change, it is important to know the deliverables and processes necessary to create secure medical device systems efficiently and cost-effectively.”

In Gates’ presentation on day two, he will discuss the new medical device cybersecurity laws and regulatory requirements and review the new manufacturer’s activities expected by the FDA, including the expected 38 cybersecurity deliverables. Importantly, Gates will focus on how to add cybersecurity processes to the development lifecycle that will satisfy the FDA and secure a medical device system without generating massive cost burdens or development delays. This session will be a lunch and learn on Feb. 8 from 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m. PT in Room 211AB.
