Minnesota-based NGO MATTER saved nearly 3.5 million pounds of medical surplus from landfills in 2022 through its MATTER 360 initiative. Through MATTER 360, MATTER provides hospitals and medical manufacturers an easy and sustainable approach to efficiently repurpose medical equipment and supplies.
MINNEAPOLIS (PRWEB) MARCH 17, 2023 — Minnesota-based global NGO MATTER today announced, through the MATTER 360 initiative of repurposing medical equipment and supplies, that nearly 3.5 million pounds of medical surplus was saved from landfills in 2022. MATTER has been involved in repurposing medical equipment and supplies since 2002, and in the last four years repurposed approximately 7.9 million pounds.
MATTER repurposes medical equipment and supplies to aid people and reduce landfill non-hazardous medical waste, accomplishing this through distributions to international hospital and clinic partners, from resale efforts, and by recycling. Established partnerships with hospitals and clinics provide MATTER the opportunity to repurpose medical supplies and equipment, which accounts for 94% of donations. As a result, medical equipment and supplies that are no longer useful in the United States, find a new life in other parts of the world.
Sarah Charai, System Director, Supply Chain Operations for Allina Health, commented, “MATTER is a valued Allina partner, and we feel confident knowing our donations to them are being repurposed for good. It’s as easy as a phone call or an email to let them know we have supplies ready for pick up, so there is no additional burden on the supply chain staff. In fact, it’s a relief to our supply chain staff knowing MATTER is the go-to source for disposal of expired and excess supplies and equipment.”
Of the remaining supplies and equipment received, MATTER remarkets approximately 5% via sales channels to support MATTER projects and operations. Unusable supplies and equipment, totaling 1%, is recycled annually, resulting in total waste of just 0.6%.
“Our partners appreciate the ease and efficiency of donating medical supplies and equipment to us, knowing that we are able to give these items a renewed purpose elsewhere,” stated Joel Anderson, Executive VP of MATTER 360. “We are grateful for all of our partners, including an increasing number of hospitals and clinics around the country, and remain committed to serving them.”
