Medical Alley Events

Medical Alley’s premier annual gathering – about you, for you! Connect with the colleagues and industry leaders that make Medical Alley the global epicenter of health innovation and care. Celebrate our leadership, innovation and impact on improving and saving lives.

2017's SOLD OUT annual meeting brought together more than 650 industry professionals. This year we are expecting 750+ in attendance, so reserve your tickets early to ensure your spot!

Keynote: Tony Miller, CEO, Bind

Tony Miller’s passion for the health care system to be designed by consumers comes from his mother. The matriarch of a blue-collar family, she would often tell physicians how she wanted all of her children to be treated while referencing her ever-present Grey’s Anatomy Handbook.

His impatience and irreverence with the status quo led him to co-found Definity Health in the late 1990’s. He pioneered consumer-driven health care because he passionately believes that changing the financing of health care holds the key to redesigning our broken system. After Definity was sold to UnitedHealth Group in 2004, Tony went on to found and lead Lemhi Ventures, a venture capital fund dedicated to starting, and growing disruptive businesses to redesign health care. As part of Lemhi, he launched carol.com—a novel way to connect a consumer’s pocketbook to their provider choices. Carol’s consumer website allowed people to shop and compare providers on a “care marketplace”.

While both companies were successfully launched, proven and sold, Tony’s quest to truly solve our health system’s core problem was not complete. In 2016, he decided to throw out the traditional health plan model and rebuild it on an entirely novel financing system. Imagine having health care coverage for the way we actually use the health care system (not some health policy fantasy). Imagine having all of the treatment options and provider choices built upon your health conditions. Imagine health insurance that’s simple and available “on demand”. It’s finally here. With Bind, On-Demand Health Insurance, Tony and his team promise to truly change the way health insurance works.

The upcoming publication of the new ASME Standard V&V 40 -- Assessing Credibility of Computational Modeling and Simulation Results through Verification and Validation: Application to Medical Devices will be a focus area of discussion during the 2018 ASME V&V Symposium. Developed through close collaboration between device developers, regulatory agencies, and other device industry stakeholders, the V&V 40 standard provides modelers in the medical device industry with a framework for establishing model credibility requirements. The anticipated publication date is June 2018.

The V&V 40 Subcommittee leadership is coordinating an all-day event focusing on the current regulatory pathway for computer models in medical device submissions and the role the ASME V&V40 standard can play in supporting computer modeling for regulatory decision-making. As such, we are seeking participation from computer modelers and regulatory affairs personnel to engage with the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health staff from both the Office of Device Evaluation and the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, along with members of the ASME V&V 40 Subcommittee.

Presentations by BD, Medtronic, Zimmer Biomet, and FDA are planned, along with a regulatory panel to discuss the opportunities and challenges for advancing the use of modeling in medical device submissions. We would like to include your perspective so please set aside this day to learn from your peers about the opportunity this new regulatory pathway presents to industry.

Questions should be directed to Tina Morrison, Chair of the V&V40 Subcommittee: tina.morrison@fda.hhs.gov or Ryan Crane, ASME V&V40 Secretary CraneR@asme.org

The Fundamentals Workshop offers responsive instruction in the theory and applications of hypnosis in a clinical setting. There is a mix of lectures, demonstrations, exercises and small group practice with supervision and feedback. Instructors systematically teach to the learning styles and needs of participants. Course content is organized in a spiral curriculum (conforming to the standards of training of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis) with topics presented several times. Succeeding iterations of a technique, such as hypnotic induction (initiation), are more complex, increasing participants’ knowledge and skills. After the skill basics, application topics include therapeutic communication, treatment planning, and self-hypnosis. Participants will choose sessions on the practice of hypnosis in their own medical, mental health, or professional specialization. It is estimated to be 20-24 hours of instruction and to be approved in advance by the American Society of Hypnosis (ASCH) as meeting criteria for Certification in Hypnosis by ASCH

Advanced Workshop- There are many unique benefits of hypnosis available to its practitioners. This 2-day workshop will explore those benefits and specifically 3 variables that can contribute positively to the application of clinical hypnosis skills in psychotherapy and the treatment of trauma. Scapula fractures have traditionally been thought of as rare injuries that for the most part heal fine with benign neglect. Current research has shown that a significant percentage of non-operatively treated patients with significantly displaced scapula fractures may have reduced strength, motion, and pain. Other studies have shown operative treatment to restore strength and motion post-operatively. These findings have sparked an interest for the operative treatment of scapula fractures and validated the necessity to provide the education that will make treatment of these injuries available to patients. This course will increase attendees' understanding of scapula fractures and their treatment, with a purpose to teach the surgical skills necessary to prevent morbidity from these injuries. View agenda.
