At the Table – Special Edition: Election 2020

November 6

Friday, November 6, 2020

In what continues to be a historic election, Minnesota saw record voter turnout. More than 3 million of the 4 million eligible voters cast ballots, equating to 78% voter turnout, the highest seen since 2008. Although final Minnesota election results will not be called until November 11, party control at the state level is unlikely to change, again making Minnesota the only state with a divided legislature. The Medical Alley Association will continue to provide updates, including details on how this will affect the 2021 legislative session. Here is how the landscape looks as of November 6:

Federal

Minnesota’s congressional delegation ends the election in an even split: four Democrats and four Republicans. After a 30-year tenure in the House, Collin Peterson lost Minnesota’s 7th congressional district to Michelle Fishbach, a former Lieutenant Governor, who served 22 years as a State Senator.

Incumbent Angie Craig (MN-2) won her re-election against opponent, Tyler Kistner. In September, Legal Marijuana Now Party candidate Adam Weeks died, causing substantial ambiguity about whether the election would be held in November as scheduled or postponed until a special election in February 2021. In the end, courts ruled to proceed with the November election.

State

The DFL still controls the House, while the GOP holds the Senate by a narrow margin. The makeup as of 12 p.m. on November 6 shows the Senate holding a one-seat GOP majority and the House retaining their DFL majority by four seats.

Party control remains the same in both the House and Senate, as does their caucus leadership. The Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus re-elected Paul Gazelka as majority leader and the Senate DFL re-elected Susan Kent as minority leader.

In the Minnesota House, the DFL caucus re-elected Melissa Hortman as Speaker of the House-designate and Majority Leader Winkler, who was challenged by Representative Jamie Becker-Finn — a member of the People of Color and Indigenous Caucus (POCI). The House GOP meets today to choose their caucus leader.

The final Minnesota state election results will be called early next week, but here are the results as they stand at 12 p.m. on Friday, November 6:

Disclaimer: Due to court order, absentee ballots will continue to be accepted after election day. These unofficial results will not be complete until November 11, 2020.
